Ketamine-Assisted
Psychotherapy (KAP)
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) 101
I offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with several different organizations.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes.
What is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an evidence-based mental health treatment that combines the therapeutic effects of ketamine with psychotherapy. Unlike traditional talk therapy alone, KAP uses ketamine to create a temporary state of increased neuroplasticity, emotional openness, and psychological flexibility, allowing clients to access thoughts, emotions, and memories from a different perspective. During this window of enhanced learning and healing, clients work with a trained therapist to process experiences, gain insight, and create meaningful, lasting changes in their lives.
What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is a medication that was originally developed as an anesthetic in the 1960s and has been safely used in medical settings for decades. While it is not considered a classic psychedelic, it can produce psychedelic-like experiences and has been shown to be highly effective in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions. Ketamine works differently than traditional antidepressants and is known for its ability to create rapid improvements in mood and emotional well-being.
How Does Ketamine Feel?
The experience of ketamine varies from person to person, but many individuals report feeling deeply relaxed, calm, introspective, and emotionally open. Some people experience altered perceptions of time and space, vivid imagery, heightened self-awareness, or a temporary sense of distance from everyday worries and self-criticism. Clients often describe the experience as dreamlike, peaceful, or insightful. While the experience can feel unusual at times, it is typically well-tolerated when administered in a safe, supportive therapeutic environment.
How Does Ketamine Work?
Ketamine works primarily by affecting the brain's glutamate system through NMDA receptor antagonism. This triggers a cascade of neurobiological changes that increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), stimulate new neural connections, and enhance neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to learn, adapt, and heal. Ketamine also temporarily reduces activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN), a brain network associated with rumination, self-criticism, anxiety, and depression. These changes create an opportunity for clients to break free from rigid patterns of thinking and develop healthier emotional and behavioral responses.
What is the Cost of Treatment?
Through Better U, the cost is between $88-100/session. They also accept HSA/FSA and payment plan options. In this cost, the visit with the medical professional, app, and all essentials are included. My session fees can be submitted through insurance, if applicable.
